Fables - Writing unit 13

One day there was a puppy that felt ashamed that it was a puppy. All her friends were very skilled and talented but only the puppy could not find its talent. Her friend cat could jump off from a roof without a scratch and climb trees. Her best friend fox could creep pass a fly without it noticing and her other friend lion was very strong. The puppy tried everything she could think of. She tried cheering, hopping, skipping, climbing trees, slithering, cooking and even gardening. Nothing worked. Puppy was exhausted but as she walked home, she saw her friend bunny crying. Puppy raced up to bunny and asked her what happened. Puppy soon solved bunny’s problem and bunny was delighted. Puppy was happier than ever to solve bunny’s problem and help her out. Later on, puppy helped out all her friends and she was loved by everyone.

“Sometimes we cannot see our own strength.”

Analysing the poem, "The snake"

1) Subject matter

The poem is named “The snake” and the poet is Sharon (Jamaica). This poem is about a snake and the poem describes the snake and its movements.

2) Message/purpose

The purpose of this poem is to relate the snake’s appearance and movement to real things. An animal can be looked just normal but they can be compared to objects, environment, humans and other animals.

3) Emotion/feelings

On the first two stanzas, the poet makes the reader feel that the snake is a bad, mean and an awful creature hunting down its prey. A quote relating to this is “Its tongue sticking out, like an arrow ready to strike.” The third stanza opposes the first two stanzas by relating the snake to a gentle creature like this. “Just staring like a newborn sheep”.

4) Technique

The technique Sharon, the poet, used only one technique and it is similes. The whole poem is based on similes and they do not rhyme. A few examples are “Like an arrow ready to strike.”, “Its sinuous movement like hungry eels” and “And like a river flowing”. The poem was very effective because the snake could be clearly pictured as the similar thing.

5) Summary

The impact of the poem on me was strong because it made me think of the snake and the similar things very similar and I thought the description fitted in very well. The poet had achieved her purpose because it had a strong impact on me.

The book I have been reading

The book I have been reading recently is called the 'Keys to the Kingdom'. This is a book about a boy called Arthur Penhaligon who was an asthmatic. He moved to a new school and while he was on the cross country run, he's asthma worsened and he collasped. This was when a old man and his servent appeared out of nowhere and gave Arthur a strange key that looked like a clock hand. This clock hand mysteriously healed Arthur's asthma but it started to make him see things he did not want to see. He could see dangerous monsters which infected humans. Also he saw a weird house which was where the weired creatures that infected the humans came from so he goes in to stop whatever it is.This story is based on Arthur's adventure to stop the danger and save his family and the world. This book is a fun fantsy book so I suggest it to readers from year four to year eight because if your older than that, you might find it boring and if you are younger than that, you might not understand some bits.

Overview of year 7 English!

Term 1
- Short Stories - 'HPA'

I really liked reading short stories and I liked writing it too.
My short story was about a boy who learnt how to hack a computer from his dad but unfortunately, his dad died. He was adopted by a bad person who is forcing him to hack into a computer but the boy gets caught. He gets taken to the police but the HPA (Hacking Preventing Agency) needs his help to develop a program to stop hackers so the boy willingly helps them.

Term 2
- 'The Silver Donkey'

We had a test based on the silver donkey and this was very hard. This was because we had to write three paragraphs on three questions. I found it hard to write about a chracter based on the book but I did it and I thought my results were pretty good.

-
Opinionative Speech - 'Schools should allow 30 minutes of physical exercise to all students"

This was a speech we had to make and present to the audience to convince them about the topic.

Term 3
- 'The Dark Hills Divide' - Interview
An interview with a character in the book. It makes me think in creative ways and I hope I get the results soon!
- Poetry
We just started but we've only done similies.

Term 4
-
Introduction to Shakespeare

Black = Finished
Blue = Not Finished

Reflection of Dark Hills Divide

The book Dark Hills Divide, written by Patrick Carman, is about a twelve-year-old girl called Alexa. There are walls there to protect everyone and Alexa but she can't overcome her curosity. As the person who built the walls, Warvold, dies Alexa is left with a whole lot of mysteries she has to solve.

The characters excluding Alexa and Warvold are James Daley, Ganesh, Grayson, and Nicholas. These are peole living inside the walls. The animals friends of Alexa are Ander, Murphy, Darius, Malcom and the forest council.
The things I liked about the book were the characters and the unpredictable mysteries. I liked the book and there was nothing that made me dislike it. Overall, I thought the book was fantastic and I recommend it to students in school and you can try reading it to!
